Ghost jobs, or fake postings

Some postings left long ago and nobody told them. We looked for where they linger the most.

Those who keep summoning them

Some employers post the same job title several times as separate postings. Innoview does it the most: “Java Developer” is up in 3 copies. This can be genuine mass hiring too; the numbers do not show which.

Why does a posting stay up?

There are three reasons a posting stays up for months. From the outside we cannot see which one applies to a given employer, but there is hardly another.

Impossible requirements
They ask for so much at once that the right candidate practically does not exist: a two-metre-tall, blond, ripped, handsome prince, and no salary above a million forints on offer either. You can find someone like that, but it takes a very long time, and the posting stays up meanwhile.
The look of growth
Plenty of open positions tell the outside world that the company is growing and hiring. Sometimes they do not even want to hire anyone, they only want to create that impression.
Plain negligence
The position was filled or cancelled, but nobody took the posting down. There is no intent behind it, nobody is simply looking after it.

How we counted

  • Only postings that are still active on the original site count. The senior level is left out, so the numbers describe the board’s default view.
  • Company names are compared lower-cased and trimmed, so “Example Ltd.” and “example ltd.” count as one employer.
  • LinkedIn is left out because it has no “still active” state, only a time window.
  • The “Why does a posting stay up” section describes the three possible reasons. Which one applies to a given employer is not something the numbers show.
